About the Hijri Calendar

The Hijri calendar (also known as the Islamic calendar or Lunar calendar) is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It is used to determine the proper days of Islamic holidays and rituals, such as the annual fasting period and the timing for the Hajj pilgrimage.

The 12 Islamic Months

1. Muharram (محرم) - Sacred month
2. Safar (صفر)
3. Rabi' al-Awwal (ربيع الأول) - Birth of Prophet
4. Rabi' al-Thani (ربيع الثاني)
5. Jumada al-Awwal (جمادى الأولى)
6. Jumada al-Thani (جمادى الثانية)
7. Rajab (رجب) - Sacred month
8. Sha'ban (شعبان)
9. Ramadan (رمضان) - Fasting month
10. Shawwal (شوال) - Eid al-Fitr
11. Dhul-Qi'dah (ذو القعدة) - Sacred month
12. Dhul-Hijjah (ذو الحجة) - Hajj & Eid al-Adha

Key Differences from Gregorian Calendar

  • Lunar-based: Based on moon cycles, not solar year
  • Shorter year: 354-355 days vs 365-366 days
  • Shifting dates: Islamic dates shift 10-12 days earlier each Gregorian year
  • Moon sighting: New months begin with actual moon sighting
  • Starting point: Year 1 AH = 622 CE (Prophet's migration to Medina)

Sacred Months

Four months are considered sacred in Islam: Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qi'dah, and Dhul-Hijjah. During these months, warfare was traditionally forbidden, and good deeds are believed to carry greater reward.

Important Islamic Events

  • Ramadan (9th month): Month of fasting
  • Laylat al-Qadr: Night of Power (last 10 nights of Ramadan)
  • Eid al-Fitr: 1st Shawwal (after Ramadan)
  • Hajj: 8-12 Dhul-Hijjah
  • Eid al-Adha: 10th Dhul-Hijjah
  • Islamic New Year: 1st Muharram
  • Day of Ashura: 10th Muharram

Why the Dates Shift

Since the Hijri year is 11-12 days shorter than the solar year, Islamic dates shift backwards through the Gregorian calendar. This means Ramadan, for example, occurs in different seasons over a 33-year cycle, allowing Muslims worldwide to experience fasting in both summer and winter months.

The current Islamic year is 1447 AH (Anno Hegirae)

"AH" means "After Hijra" (the Prophet's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE)
